Nutting's world is caving in

I heard the rumor last week and couldn't get it confirmed.

I didn't want to believe it.

Monday someone anonymously emailed me stating the same thing.

I was still in disbelief because it just didn't make any sense. But I couldn't keep refusing to acknowledge that it might be true.

So I dug even further.

Then Tuesday I heard it again, but this time it came from two sources on opposite ends of the continent and in another anonymous email.

It just had to be true.

The Pirates refuse to confirm it and my sources around the team don't want to talk about it which only points me in one possible direction..

It appears Neal Huntington was only given a two-year deal.

That's a devastating blow to Neal Huntington and the Pirates, not to mention the fans.

For one thing, there isn't anyone worth more than a can of corn that is going to toss their job security in another organization out the door to run and play games with Huntington knowing his superiors think so little of him they gave him the shortest deal in the game.

During an entire franchise rebuilding process, no less.

Of course, there has to be someone out there who only cares about the amount of money in their paycheck instead of their career after two years. Here kitty kitty, here kitty.

For another, who wants to be evaluated on turning around an entire organization in two short years when Huntington himself is brand new in the GM role, much less also knowing Shapiro ran him out of his front office years ago?

Talk about a lack of job security. Wow.

Now there's talk that Huntington is being required to hire a babysitter, er, um, I mean, senior adviser to hold Huntington's hand.

Talk about a confidence level blow to diaper wearing Huntington from his CEO.

But guess what? Nobody wants that job either so they might have to turn to a great joke teller who once had a good baseball mind instead of a real honest-to-goodness respected name in the game who could make a difference.

Hey, someone has to keep the place lively for the baby.

Well, just when you thought it could get any worse than all that, along comes the revelation that Shapiro has declared "hands-off" to Cleveland employees leaving Shapiro laughing his butt off knowing he had his cake (getting rid of Huntington) and eating it too (can't touch this).

And just for the fun of it, other clubs are now joining in on the circus act telling Huntington uh-uh-uhhhh.. can't touch this either.

But don't fear Pirate fans. Just think, when Huntington decides to hold his rebuilding garage sale, you can be absolutely sure there will be one trading partner Huntington will have at his disposal.

Yup - Mark Shapiro.

The same guy Huntington owes for maneuvering behind other people's backs to get Huntington hired at the last moment, not to mention Huntington's thankfulness for his astronomical salary increase after he thought he was all but certain to be further demoted in his old organization.

How can Huntington resist such wonderful favors while digging for treasure in a depleted farm system?

The last sentence in the last chapter of the official big blue book on rebuilding an MLB franchise says:

"WARNING TO OWNERSHIP: when you find you have made a mistake in your executive hiring, just remember it's more cost efficient to eat that contract than it is to lose forty times that in short-term assets."

It's not too late to backup and come out smelling like roses Mr. Nutting. Everyone knows you made a mistake - even you have to know it now.

Make the move. Get this club on track. You have an entire group of men just waiting to step in and take control.

Professionals who will do it the right way, and not be shunned around the game.

earthshaking news if true Jake.

Why hasn't Paul Meyer covered this by now? Shocking

2 years is a death sentence, not a contract.

how about this for another kick to the unspeakables?

Open on the road (again - but at least a warm weather city); NO home games on Memorial Day, July 4th or Labor Day weekends --- NOT EVEN SCHEDULED TO PLAY on Memorial Day & Labor Day; Yankee games are finally at PNC, but Tues/Wed/Thur will be a dud; and finish on the road in SD. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE. The 2.5 hour drive to Jacobs Field is starting to look very attractive.

TWO FRIKIN YEARS? Nutting needs an enema. Good job Jake.

Well, can't say I'm surprised. however, if we are just going to dump every good player out the door Neal becomes the fall guy and will be gone in 2 years. So, this probably means no Garner. Do you think Jewett would take this gig? I know he was voted best manager in AAA this year but how good is he versus Luvello. Bill

This is scary stuff. I didn't want to believe the black-balling Neal is receiving, but the longer it takes to fill the empty positions makes me believe it. If Neal was Coonelly's hire, what does that say about his decision making? We are adrift at sea....

I heard they signed Chuck Tanner as baseball advisor?

It wouldn't surprise me to see Tanner get involved if the Pirates asked him to. But is the timing right for him, or is the timing right for Bob Nutting? Hmm..

You really can't possibly believe this conspiracy stuff that you're spewing now, can you? You've got to be more intelligent than this. I guess I've given you way more credit than you deserve. This blog is certainly circling the drain now. You couldn't possibly think that your begging and pleading here for the Nuttings to change their minds is being read by them. You couldn't be that egotistic, could you?

angrypiratesfan -- LoL.. no, I don't think Robert Nutting is going to change directions just because I happened to think he should. Be serious.

But I do think Nutting and Coonelly horribly underestimated Huntington's ability to put a quality team together. And double that if he was given a two year deal.

Do I believe they could back up? Absolutely. Fortune 500's do it, why not the Pirates?

Could it be that originally it was a 4 year deal. When they started to hear scuttlebut around their leaked hire that they changed the deal to 2 year. Thus telling Huntington to prove that the scuttlebut is false.

Anyone that is reading the fairy-tale-fiction in this blog and is not taking it as comedy is deeply disturbed. I especially like the mention of his "sources around the team that don't want to talk". How can someone that won't talk be considered a source. Or reading things in an anonymous e-mail, then stating, "It just had to be true". I simply laughed at this until I saw readers actually were believing this garbage. Just because there is no news, doesn't mean you make stuff up and try and pass it as news.

Nutting is not backtracking or worrying that the wrong choices have been made. He had Coonely pegged for a long time and would not have hired Huntington if he wasn't 100% behind him. Huntington stated in today's paper that he would like to hire an asst. GM before hiring the others and this makes sense. He has also stated that he hasn't contacted any managerial candidates. The next few weeks will be slow with Pirate news for numerous reasons, but that doesn't mean the conspiracy theories need to be dredged up.
