Excuse me. But did ..

.. Oliver Perez just walk into Yankee Stadium and throw a 5-hit shutout to beat Roger Clemens and the white hot Yankees who had won nine straight games and had scored no less than four runs per game the last 15?

"We ran into a buzzsaw," said Yankees manager Joe Torre. "He shut us down completely. The thing that's impressive is that he's wild enough to keep you from zeroing in. He's sort of all over the place -- he'll throw it up, he'll throw it down, he'll throw it away -- yet he has quality pitches."

Listen to Dave Littlefield in MP3 or Windows Media format as he tells Bucco Blog last year why he dealt Perez.

I think it's only fair to wonder why Maholm or Duke wasn't in this deal instead.

Ughhh..

This doesn't have anything to do with Perez, but you've been pretty hard on the bullpen, and at the same time hard on Doumit's game calling abilities, both well deserved.
That said, I'd like to point out that Doumit has been having an effect on the bullpen as well.

The bullpen's ERA when Doumit is catching is 7.38 with 19 strikeouts to 20 walks and a 1.77 whip in 39 innings. Compared to a 4.28 ERA with 134 strikeouts to 69 walks and a 1.38 whip in the 172.1 innings when he isn't behind the plate.

So maybe they aren't really the worst bullpen in the NL.

great stuff - love the stats, thanks!
